Miss Black Ohio Pageant

Dayna Shoulders

I value integrity. I strive to do the right thing whether no one or everyone is watching. I am tenacious. I believe that I can accomplish anything even in the face of adversity. What is your greatest strength: Bringing out the best in other people.

I am a natural born leader, honors student, volleyball player, softball player, visual artist, public speaker, and mentor.

The hardest thing I’ve ever done would be playing club volleyball and Varsity softball at the same time during my Sophomore year of high school. I had to manage my time well because I had school all day, then softball practice, then straight to volleyball practice, and then I had to finish my homework. I remember always being tired. Some nights I didn’t go to sleep until 3:00 AM. I wanted to quit my sports, but I was so determined. This went on for four months. I ended my school year with honors, lettered in softball, and was a starter for volleyball season. I was so proud of myself that I never gave up!

I volunteer as a greeter at the Columbus Museum of Art where I welcome in visitors and talk to them about artworks in the museum. I also mentor young girls. Every meeting we drink Starbucks and doodle while we talk. I talk to them about how to make goals, succeed in school, and be someone they can talk to.

My pageant platform is titled “Own It!” I want to encourage young girls to own who they are so they can own their futures! As a young woman pursuing business, I want to see more women, specifically black women, earn the top positions in corporations. In order for that to happen young girls need to learn not to fear success and failure! Through workshops and mentorship I plan on instilling the mindset of owning who you are so you can own the business too!
